The ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is an ancient tree over 200 million years old. The ginkgo can live up to an astonishing 3,000 years. Overtime, humans have found fossils of ginkgo’s leaves and we thought this species went extinct until a biologist went hiking and found a living ginkgo.
How do you identify a ginkgo? Ginkgo’s leaves are like no other tree. They have a beautiful butterfly shaped leaf that is a solid light green and in the fall the leaves change to a stunning yellow that will later fall to the ground as it is a deciduous tree. The ginkgo’s bark is a gray color and has a rough texture, but as the tree ages it becomes browner and will have become more furrowed. The ginkgo does not only provide beauty, it also provides medicines that can help with anxiety, dementia, allergies, eye issues and more!
Ginkgos are native to China and you will find them in a temperate climate as that is what they prefer. Ginkgos like moist soil that is deep, as the roots can grow over 3 feet down.
As you can see the Ginkgo ages dated back to the dinosaurs and is a truly amazing beautiful tree.
