Heavyweight on trees in the winter

It’s that time of year again, where ice and snow threaten our trees! You may start to see droopy branches due to the extra weight of ice and snow piled up on our trees’ branches, but don’t worry as the snow and ice melt your trees will be just fine. Trees are built to make it through heavy ice and snow.

Though trees are designed to withstand ice and snow, they can only take so much. If the tree does fail, it will cause cracking and broken limbs and branches. When ice and snow piles up on branches it adds extra weight to the tree and when the tree reaches its limit, branches will break. The cracking of branches may rip off some of the tree’s bark exposing the cambium layer of the tree. If bigger or multiple branches break you will need to call an arborist to prune and ensure the safety of your trees and if you want the best thing possible for the tree call Arbor Ace to get the job done right the first time!

The one tree that may be able to withstand any amount of ice and snow is Pinus flexilis, also known as limber pine. Yep, you guessed it! Pinus Flexilus is extremely flexible and can take a high-level pressure on its branches before breaking. I once to try to break the limber pine with all my might and I was able to bend it fully back before it finally broke. Hopefully this does not happen to you this winter, but if it does call Arbor Ace to ensure your trees safety.
