Late Winter Bloomers . . .“When you see these, spring is around the corner!”

Are you waiting for spring blooms? . . . Well, here are some late winter bloomers, to tell you spring is on its way. These three trees naturally bloom earlier than other trees, and can even provide an early source of nectar for bees. So look out for the Witch Hazel, Cornelian Cherry, and Okame Cherry for their beautiful blooms in late winter!

Yummy Froot Loops! If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon a beautiful Witch Hazel, you will smell a fruit loop smell from the bloom before you even see the tree. The Witch Hazel bloom is yellow with red and orange cultivars, and its flower is cryptic looking. Cultivars are specially bred by humans to get the different colors that are wanted.

Cornus mas, the Cornelian Cherry, is also a late winter bloomer, just like the Witch Hazel. It has a bright yellow blossom that really pops and stands out, so if you’re walking by this tree, it is hard to miss and is a truly stunning sight to see. Their bright yellow flowers bloom in clusters, and the blooms have a really fragrant smell that sticks!

Finally, the Okame Cherry is the first cherry to bloom in late winter. With a stunning light to rosy pink color of flower this tree has a lot of blossoms, but does not have a smell. This just might be one of the most beautiful trees you will ever see and is such a stunning tree.

So if you’re looking for signs of spring, early bloomers are what you want to see in late winter. Watch out for these trees, and you will know when spring is on the way!
