The Shagbark Hickory belongs to the Juglandaceae family and its Latin name is Carya ovata. Shagbark Hickories are native to Eastern North America. This tree is typically medium sized and has an average height of 70-80 feet, but some can grow up to a shocking 120 feet. The Shagbark Hickory is deciduous, pointy at tips, dark yellow-ee-green, and smooth. It’s twigs are stout, shiny/smooth, and are brown-red and hairy and as they grow older they become a lighter grey and non-hairy. The Shagbark Hickory’s bark is unique and unlike other trees bark because it is smooth when it is young and as it grows older it develops shaggy, flaky/peeling strips and is light grey. This tree has nuts under a layer of thick dark husks. The Shagbark Hickory’s wood is strong, heavy, tough and has a reddish tint to it. As you can see the Shagbark Hickory is a very unique tree.
